Methoprene is a chemical insecticide that belongs to the group of synthetic pyrethroid compounds. It is used as a pesticide in agriculture and urban environments. Methoprene has been shown to have sublethal effects on endoparasites, such as fleas, cockroaches, and ticks. Methoprene has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of proteins in cells by blocking protein genes that encode for detoxification enzymes. This leads to an accumulation of toxic substances inside the cell and cellular death. Methoprene also binds to response elements in DNA and inhibits transcription factors, which are proteins that bind to DNA and regulate gene expression. This leads to decreased production of proteins needed for cell growth and proliferation.
