N-Desmethyl galanthamine inhibits acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme responsible for the breakdown of acetylcholine, which is a neurotransmitter. This inhibition leads to increased levels of acetylcholine, which results in increased neuron stimulation and improved memory function. N-Desmethyl galanthamine also binds to β2 nicotinic receptor sites and blocks the binding of nicotine, leading to decreased nicotine dependence.
