CAS :Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine that inhibits the release of histamine from mast cells. It also inhibits serotonin uptake and blocks serotonin receptors, which may explain its usefulness in treating bowel disease. Cyproheptadine has side-effect profiles similar to those of other antihistamines, including drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, and dizziness. The drug is used to diagnose carcinoid syndrome as well as a treatment for some symptoms of this syndrome. Cyproheptadine has been shown to inhibit glucose production by pancreatic beta cells and reduce cyclin D2 levels in lymphocytes. Cyproheptadine has been shown to have brain functions that are important for cognition, such as memory acquisition and retrieval. This drug binds with high affinity to the 5-HT1A receptor.
