4-Carbamoyl-2-(4-phenylbutanamido)butanoic acid is a prodrug that is metabolized to phenylacetylglutamine in vivo. 4-Carbamoyl-2-(4-phenylbutanamido)butanoic acid has been shown to be effective for the treatment of hyperammonemia. Administration of this drug has been shown to be synergistic with benzoate, an inhibitor of ammonia production. This drug also has proteolytic properties, which are essential for protein digestion and absorption. It is not known whether this drug crosses the blood brain barrier or if it can be used as a dietary supplement. The use of 4-Carbamoyl-2-(4-phenylbutanamido)butanoic acid as a treatment method is still experimental and its efficacy has not yet been determined.
