1,3-O-Benzylidene-L-arabitol is an enantiomer of arabinitol. It has been shown to have cytotoxic effects on cultured human leukemia cells, but the mechanism of action is unclear. 1,3-O-Benzylidene-L-arabitol may inhibit glycosylation by inhibiting the formation of a key enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of glucose to serine in glycosphingolipids and glycosylation. 1,3-O-Benzylidene-L-arabitol also inhibits the synthesis of erythrosphingosine and psychosine by blocking galactosyl transferase.
