The molecule is chiral because of its two isomers. One isomer has a hydroxyl group bonded to the nitrogen atom and the other has a methyl group bonded to the nitrogen atom. 1H,3H-Furo[3,4-c]pyridin-3-one can be used as a recording material for infrared spectroscopy due to its high sensitivity and low background noise. Isomers of this compound are not coplanar.
