It can be prepared by the reaction of sodium sulfide with pyrazolines. 2-Nitrothiophene has been found to be an electron donor in the reduction of ferredoxin and other electron acceptors, such as nucleophiles. The reduction of this compound is catalyzed by acid at low pH. The redox potential for this molecule is -0.3 V.
