CAS :Di-n-butyl sulphate is a colourless liquid that is soluble in water and alcohol. It has a strong odour of ether and is corrosive to metals. Di-n-butyl sulphate has been used as an anti-inflammatory agent, as well as a preservative for some medicines. It has also been shown to be effective against HIV infection and cancer, although it can cause adverse effects such as renal toxicity in large doses. This compound binds to serine proteases and inhibits their activity by forming hydrogen bonds with the enzyme's serine residue, which prevents the enzyme from breaking down proteins. Di-n-butyl sulphate may also inhibit the production of inflammatory molecules such as prostaglandins by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes.
