3-Phenylpropanethioamide is an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of bacterial biosynthesis, which may be due to its ability to form reactive oxygen species and dimethyl disulfide. 3-Phenylpropanethioamide also binds to penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition, preventing the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. 3-Phenylpropanethioamide is capable of forming radical intermediates from peroxide, which can lead to DNA damage and mutations.
