    (R/S)-Liquiritigenin is a natural compound that has been shown to inhibit the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and proteinases. This inhibition may be due to its ability to react with reactive oxygen species, which prevents the oxidation of proteins in the cell. (R/S)-Liquiritigenin has also been shown to increase mitochondrial membrane potential by increasing ATP synthesis. It has been shown to bind to DNA, inhibiting transcription and replication. The anti-inflammatory properties of liquiritigenin may be due to its ability to inhibit toll-like receptor 4 signaling pathways.
