It inhibits the RNA polymerase of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and prevents the synthesis of viral DNA. It also inhibits tumor growth by inhibiting the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase. 2’,3’-Bis-O-tert-butyldimethylsilyluridine is synthesized by reacting 2′,3′-dideoxyribonucleosides with tertiary butyl dimethylchlorosilane in aqueous media.
