Camaldulenic acid is a diterpene compound that is found in the plant species Rhaphiolepis. It has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on 11-keto-beta-boswellic acid, which is an active metabolite of boswellic acid. Camaldulenic acid optimizes the inhibition rate of boswellic acid, and can be used as a calcium antagonist. It also has phytochemical studies which show that it inhibits the biosynthesis of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6. Camaldulenic acid is detected in tissues with a detection time of approximately 2 hours after oral administration, and its biosynthesis techniques have been studied using techniques such as chromatography and NMR spectroscopy.
