It can be prepared by reacting 2,6-dichloro-4-hydroxyphenol with ethylene glycol and chlorinating the resulting product. 2,6-Dichloro-4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol has been shown to inhibit the growth of Russula subnigricans and other fungi.
