It is an activator of glycoconjugates and has been shown to be effective against certain cancers. 3,4,6-Tri-O-benzyl-2-deoxy-D-glucono-1,5-lactone has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. This compound also inhibits lactate production by inhibiting the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LDH).
