Ethyl 3-methyl-2-oxocyclopentane-1-carboxylate

The major product of the reaction is tert-butyl 3-methyl-2-oxocyclopentane-1-carboxylate, which can be converted to ethyl 3-methylcyclohexane carboxylate by treatment with lithium aluminium hydride. The reaction proceeds in high yield and provides a convenient route to the cyclic ketone, quinine. The synthesis of the axial fragment is also enantioselective, giving an almost racemic mixture of both diastereoisomers. The tertiary alcohol functions as a nucleophile in this process.
