It is not very reactive, so it does not combine with other elements to form compounds. Boron occurs in some plants, such as roses or wheat; in the soil; and in seawater. Boron can also be found in many foods, including raisins, almonds, and walnuts. Boron has been used as a nutrient solution for plants to increase their growth rate and improve the quality of their yield. The coordination geometry of boron varies depending on its environment. In biological samples boron can be detected using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with magnesium salt as a stabilizer. Plasma mass spectrometry can also be used to detect boron.
