It can be used as a sealant or coating material, a filler for plastics, and as an optical filter. Zirconium sulfate tetrahydrate also has the ability to generate carbon dioxide gas when heated to high temperatures. The reaction mechanism of zirconium sulfate tetrahydrate involves the formation of zirconium oxide, which reacts with sodium carbonate to form the desired product. This reaction is usually accomplished by adding hydrochloric acid to the mixture. Zirconium sulfate tetrahydrate can be used in biodiesel production because it catalyzes the reduction of fatty acids into biodiesel.
