CAS :Sancycline is an amide tetracycline antibiotic. This drug binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit and inhibits protein synthesis, which leads to bacterial cell death. Sancycline is effective against a wide range of bacteria that cause infectious diseases, such as streptococci, pneumococci, staphylococci, and gonococci. The structure of this drug was determined by X-ray crystallography. The photochemical properties of sancycline were also studied in tissue culture cells. It has been shown that sancycline binds to the nuclear DNA of cells and prevents DNA synthesis by inhibiting the binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to diazonium salt-treated nuclei. Sancycline also reacts with hydrogen molecules in the reaction solution to form reactive intermediates that can react with alkylsulfonyl groups on proteins or DNA.
