  • Promethazine N-oxide

    Promethazine N-oxide is a promethazine derivative that contains an oxygen atom in the para position. Promethazine N-oxide is used as a premedication and antihistamine in veterinary medicine. It is also used to treat nausea and vomiting, vertigo, motion sickness, and hypersensitivity reactions. The compound is metabolized by demethylation and sulfoxidation to produce methoxyphenothiazines such as promethazine. In analytical toxicology, this drug can be used to detect metoprolol in urine samples by elution from a solid phase extraction cartridge with acidic methanol or ethyl acetate followed by incubations with n-oxide and supernatants of tissue extract or bone tissue. Promethazine N-oxide has been shown to have potent anti-inflammatory properties in bone tissue culture, which may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
