2,3,4,6-Tetra-O-benzyl-D-galactono-1,5-lactone is an aldehyde that has been synthesized from tert-butyl bromoacetate and ethynyl acetate in the presence of cesium carbonate. It is an exocyclic aldehyde that forms a cyclic ester with glycine. The synthetic pathway was stereoselective because the exocyclic double bond was only formed on one face of the molecule. This product can be used as an intermediate for the synthesis of glycine analogues and glycines.
