It is a potent activator of potassium channels and has been used in research as a tool for studying ion channel function. MOCAc is not an inhibitor of voltage sensitive sodium channels but does inhibit calcium currents. MOCAc also has been shown to be a ligand for the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and is able to bind to the beta subunit of this receptor.
