N-acetyl-DL-tryptophan has been shown to be beneficial in treating autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. It also has neurokinin-1 receptor agonist activity, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of proinflammatory cytokines. This drug has a pKa of 9.5 and is most stable at pH 6.0 or greater. It can be used as a diagnostic tool for identifying bacterial strains by their sensitivity to N-acetyl-DL-tryptophan, because it does not interfere with the growth of bacteria that have a low pK value.
