It can be synthesized by reacting 2-chlorothiophene with acetyl chloride in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The reaction can also be performed using phosphotungstic acid or hydrochloric acid as catalysts. 2-Acetylthiophene has been shown to have antifungal activity against Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, although it has no effect on Aspergillus niger.
