2-[2-(2-Undecoxyethoxy)ethoxy]ethanol is a surfactant that is used as an emulsifier in many industrial applications, such as paints and coatings, inks, insecticides, and pharmaceuticals. It is also used to produce thickening agents and other additives for foods. 2-[2-(2-Undecoxyethoxy)ethoxy]ethanol is an anionic surfactant with a pH of 2.5. This compound has been found to inhibit microbial growth on medical devices, but can cause bleeding when applied to wounds or burns. It is not likely to be absorbed through the skin unless it is combined with another material that does penetrate the skin (e.g., petrolatum). 2-[2-(2-Undecoxyethoxy)ethoxy]ethanol has been shown to be useful as a thickener in various cosmetic products and as a preservative for food products.
