2-Benzylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine is a heterocyclic compound that was first synthesized in 1891. It has been studied for its potential use as a reagent in organic synthesis. 2-Benzylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine is also the precursor to the anti-cancer drug imatinib. The drug is used for treating chronic myelogenous leukemia and gastrointestinal stromal tumor. This chemical can be extracted from benzaldehyde and ammonia with a catalytic amount of sulfuric acid. 2-Benzylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine can be identified by iodobenzene and it will react with nitric acid to give diazonium salts that are trackable.
