3-Methyl-3-(methylsulfanyl)butan-1-ol is a metabolite of felinine, which is an amino acid that is only found in cats. It has been shown to be a urinary protein in laboratory mice and to have a physiological effect on the animals. The major metabolic pathway of 3-methyl-3-(methylsulfanyl)butan-1-ol is via the enzyme hplc analysis, which converts it into 3-mercapto-3-methyl-1-butanol. 3MSB has also been shown to be an intermediate in the synthesis of amines, such as serotonin and dopamine.
