Prop-2-en-1-yl 2-iodoacetate is a reactive, hydroxyl group containing organometallic molecule that is used as a polymerization initiator in organic reactions. Prop-2-en-1-yl 2-iodoacetate is also used as an agent for catalytic reduction of hydrocarbons and as a reagent in the synthesis of organic compounds. This compound can also be used to synthesize polymers with hydrophobic effect by reacting with halides. The mechanism of this reaction involves formation of a carbocation intermediate followed by nucleophilic attack on the propargyl cation.
