CAS :o-Xylylene dibromide is a diphosphine that is used as an antibacterial agent. It inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the iron of the active site of the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase. This prevents the production of DNA and RNA, which are essential for protein synthesis and cell division. The reaction mechanism is thought to involve a Friedel-Crafts reaction between o-xylylene dibromide and hydroxide solution, followed by a metal ion catalysed elimination reaction with imine or tetradentate ligands, such as malonic acid.
