CAS :Latanoprost is a synthetic drug that is used to treat glaucoma, ocular hypertension, and other eye diseases. It is an ester of prostaglandin F2alpha and the cyclopentane ring of the drug latanoprost lactone. Latanoprost has low bioavailability and must be taken orally with food or milk in order to increase absorption. The impurities found in this drug include chloride, which can cause adverse effects such as nausea and vomiting if ingested in high doses. The presence of chloride ions can also interfere with the chemical reactions needed for the production of latanoprost from the parent compound. A validation study was done on a chromatographic method for separating isomers of latanoprost. This method has been shown to be effective for separating these isomers, but it does not work well for some other drugs due to their similar chemical structures.
