1,2-Benzoxazole-5-carbaldehyde is a cytotoxic compound that has been shown to induce cytotoxicity in cancer cell lines. It also induces apoptosis, which is the process of programmed cell death. 1,2-Benzoxazole-5-carbaldehyde binds to DNA and inhibits transcription by binding to the RNA polymerase II enzyme. It also inhibits differentiation of mammalian cells by inhibiting protein synthesis. The anticancer activity of this compound has been demonstrated in vitro and in vivo with tumor cells in mice.
