(2S)-1-Methoxy-3-(2-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)propan-2-ol is an inhibitor of the enzyme nitroreductase. It has been shown to be effective in treating hypoxic tumor cells, which are resistant to radiation therapy. This drug also increased tumor cell death in a sublethal dose, which may have clinical relevance for treating cancer. (2S)-1-Methoxy-3-(2-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)propan-2-ol has been shown to inhibit the growth of renal cell cancer cells and cervical cancer cells in a tissue culture model system.
