(E)-N-[2-(3-Indolyl)ethyl]-3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)acrylamide is a natural compound that belongs to the class of amides. It has been shown to inhibit melanogenesis, an important process in skin pigmentation. ((E)-N-[2-(3-Indolyl)ethyl]-3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)acrylamide also inhibits lipid synthesis and induces fat cell death by inducing apoptosis. This compound may be useful as an antidiabetic agent due to its ability to inhibit glucose uptake and increase insulin secretion in the pancreas. It is also thought to have antiinflammatory properties, which may be related to its ability to suppress the production of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα).
