Sodium carbonate and sulfur trioxide react at high temperatures to produce sodium 5-sulfoisophthalate and hydrogen sulfide. The product can be purified by fractional distillation, or it can be reacted with ammonia to form ammonium sulfite, which can then be used as a fertilizer. Sodium 5-sulfoisophthalate has been shown to have fluorescence properties and can serve as a probe for hydrogen bonding between molecules.
