Aureothin is a hydroxylated analog of thiocarbamoyl-S-adenosylmethionine (TAM). Aureothin has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of fatty acids and nitro compounds by converting acetyl-CoA into succinyl-CoA. It also inhibits the methyl transferase enzyme, which is involved in the biosynthesis of DNA, RNA, and proteins. This product is used as a substrate molecule for enzymes that catalyze asymmetric syntheses. Aureothin has been shown to be active against HIV infection in vitro and may be useful in developing new drugs for the treatment of HIV.
