Description

11-β-Hydroxyandrosterone (11-β-OH) is a natural steroid hormone that is produced by the adrenal glands in response to stress. This hormone has been found to be present in human urine samples and is detectable at low concentrations with a high degree of sensitivity. 11-β-OH can be detected in plasma, where it is bound to corticosteroid binding globulin (CBG). The oxidation products, 11-ketoandrosterone and 5α,11β-dihydroxyandrosterone, are also detectable in urine and plasma. These metabolites are formed by the enzyme 11βHSD2 which converts cortisone into active cortisol. A statistically significant relationship between plasma cortisol levels and urinary excretion of 11-βOH was found for women with breast cancer.
