Methoxamine HCl is a drug that is used in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. Methoxamine HCl acts on the 5-HT2 receptor and increases intracellular calcium levels by releasing calcium from intracellular stores. It also inhibits the release of noradrenaline and has some effects on energy metabolism. Methoxamine HCl has been shown to significantly increase maternal blood flow, which may be due to its ability to stimulate cardiac contractility. Methoxamine HCl also stimulates polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in hepatocyte-like cells and can be used as an analytical method for detecting DNA fragments in vitro. Methoxamine HCl also activates the papillary muscle, which can lead to a temporary cure for heart block in patients with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter.
