1-Ethyl-1,3-dihydro-2H-indol-2-one is a merocyanine dye that has been used to produce polymeric materials with optical properties. It is soluble in organic solvents and yields higher fluorescence than other merocyanine dyes. 1-Ethyl-1,3-dihydro-2H-indol-2-one can be thermally reactive, giving a red color and releasing hydrogen cyanide (HCN) gas at temperatures above 200°C. 1EIIDO also reacts with thioethers, phenols, and orthoformates to give ionic products. The photophysical properties of 1EIIDO are similar to those of oxindoles; it has an ionization potential of 5.4 eV and a fluorescence quantum yield of 0.07%.
