Description

5-Amino-2-naphthol is a reactive intermediate in the synthesis of sulfonamides, which are used as pharmaceuticals. It has been shown to activate with acid groups and hydroxyl groups for the formation of sulfonated products. 5-Amino-2-naphthol is a zwitterion that exists in solution as an equilibrium between its protonated and unprotonated forms. This equilibrium can be shifted by adding a strong base or an acid. The protonation of 5-amino-2-naphthol leads to its transfer from one molecule to another, which can be observed as an excited state in spectroscopic studies.
