It has been shown to bind to human mitochondrial DNA and form homologous sequences, which may be due to its ability to act as a hybridization agent. As a protein modifier, m-tolyldiethanolamine can protect proteins from oxidation in vitro and can be used as an anti-oxidant. This compound also has been used as a blood sampling device for human chorionic gonadotropin. m-Tolyldiethanolamine has also been shown to interact with nuclear DNA and inhibit the replication of bacteria resistant to antibiotics.
