Phenazopyridine is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is used to treat pain and discomfort associated with urinary tract infections. It prevents the formation of free radicals, which are produced during oxidative injury. Phenazopyridine also has the ability to reduce inflammation by blocking the production of prostaglandins. Phenazopyridine has been shown to be effective in wastewater treatment, as it is able to remove organic matter from water. This compound also has an antimicrobial effect against microbes in the environment, such as antibiotic-resistant bacteria and fungi. In addition, phenazopyridine can be used in a synergic effect with benzalkonium chloride for disinfection purposes.
