Description

2,3-Heptanedione is an organic compound that belongs to the class of methyl ketones. It is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor and is soluble in water. 2,3-Heptanedione has been shown to have negative health effects at high concentrations, including bronchiolitis obliterans and liver injury. The toxicity of 2,3-heptanedione has been studied in various test systems. 2,3-Heptanedione can be used as a test compound for the evaluation of analytical methods measuring its concentration. This diketone was found to inhibit the growth of Lactococcus lactis and other bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis in these cells through inhibition of bacterial ribosomes.
