It is found naturally as an antimicrobial component of some plants, such as garlic, onion, and leek. Isoamyl propionate has been shown to have anti-infectious properties against a variety of infectious diseases. This compound reacts with metal hydroxides to form hydrogen gas and a salt. Isoamyl propionate also binds to glycol ethers, forming an ester bond that is activated by benzalkonium chloride (BAC). The reaction mechanism for this process is not yet fully understood.
