Description

1-(Hydroxymethyl)-5,5-dimethylhydantoin is a benzimidazole derivative that has antimicrobial activity. It is used as an antimicrobial agent in the treatment of bacterial and fungal infections. 1-(Hydroxymethyl)-5,5-dimethylhydantoin is synthesized by reacting benzaldehyde with hydrazine hydrochloride. In vitro studies have shown that 1-(Hydroxymethyl)-5,5-dimethylhydantoin reacts with silver ions to form silver 1-(Hydroxymethyl)-5,5-dimethylhydantoin complex (Ag(1)HMDHM). This complex inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi by interfering with their cell membranes. Analytical methods for determining the purity of 1-(Hydroxymethyl)-5,5-dimethylhydantoin include measuring the chloride content and particle size distribution.
