Pentachlorobenzenethiol is a methyl transferase inhibitor that is used to study the matrix effects of pentachlorobenzenethiol. The clinical relevance of pentachlorobenzenethiol has been shown in a cytosolic protein and water vapor study. This drug binds to the active site of the enzyme, an intramolecular hydrogen bond, which inhibits its function. Pentachlorobenzenethiol also inhibits cellular transformation and blocks protein synthesis in liver cells at low concentrations. The optimum pH for this drug is 7.4, with an increase in toxicity at higher pH levels. Pentachlorobenzenethiol can cause acute toxicities such as atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases when administered orally or intravenously to animals, but not when applied topically to skin.
