2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol is a glycol ether that has been used in wastewater treatment as an alternative to chlorine. It is also used as a co-solvent in the manufacture of polymers and coatings. In water treatment, 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol is added to the wastewater to remove chlorophyll a. This substance has been shown to have redox potentials that are lower than those of hydrogen fluoride and methyl ethyl. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique was used to investigate the presence of 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol in DNA from E. coli cells. Hydrogen bonding between 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol molecules causes steric interactions with other reactants and products during the reaction mechanism.
