Retronecine is an alkaloid found in plants of the genus Heliotropium. It has been shown to have genotoxic properties and may be a potential biomarker for carcinogenic activity. Retronecine is produced by the reaction of chloroperbenzoic acid with heliotridine, which can be extracted from the plant with solvents such as methanol or water. The sample preparation requires high-purity solvents like chloroform or acetone, which are used to extract the retronecine from the organic solvent layer. This compound has been shown to have pharmacokinetic properties that are different than other alkaloids and is metabolized by liver microsomes. Retronecine can also be converted into tiglic acid and retrorsine, which are n-oxides of retronecine.
