Valeroidine is an analog of chitin that has been shown to have potent anticancer activity. It inhibits the growth of cancer cells by binding to heparin, a molecule that plays a role in cell adhesion and proliferation. Valeroidine also acts as a kinase inhibitor, preventing the activation of proteins involved in cell signaling pathways that promote tumor growth. This compound induces apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in Chinese hamster ovary cells and human leukemia cells. Additionally, valeroidine has been found to increase potassium ion influx in cancer cells, which may contribute to its cytotoxic effects.
