Guvacine is an antibiotic that has been used to treat bacterial infections and to prevent the spread of bacteria in cell cultures. It is a low-potency drug and has been shown to have genotoxic effects when administered at high doses. Guvacine binds to the GABA receptor, which leads to increased levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. This causes physiological effects such as sedation and decreased motor function, among other things. Guvacine has also been shown to inhibit the production of 3-t3-l1 preadipocytes, which may be due to its ability to bind with tetracycline-resistance genes.
