Fluorescin is a protein that is used as a reagent for the detection of oxydases and peroxydases. It is a fluorescence probe with a wavelength of 520 nm, which can be detected by scanning the sample with an appropriate light source. Fluorescin reacts with hydrogen peroxide to produce fluorescent resorufin, which can then be measured using various methods. The fluorescin-horseradish peroxidase reaction has been used to study the pathogenic mechanism of bacteria and viruses in biological studies and as a model system for eye disorders. The mouse monoclonal antibody response element, which is usually found in signal peptides, has been found to be present in fluorescin.
Fluorescin has also been shown to inhibit polymerase chain reactions (PCR). This inhibition was shown to be due to its ability to bind DNA polymerase and inhibit its activity.
