2-Amino-3-(4-(bis(2-chloroethyl)amino)phenyl)propanoic acid (melphalan) is a drug used in cancer chemotherapy. It is a chemical that belongs to the group of alkylating agents and inhibits DNA synthesis by binding to the amino groups of nucleic acids. Melphalan has been shown to be effective against solid tumours, such as squamous carcinoma, but not against leukemia. Melphalan also has many side effects, including cardiac effects, which are due to its ability to inhibit iron homeostasis and lead to cardiotoxicity.
